Creating an Item Post

Add individual items that you can use to create a list or gallery.

Items is a type of content that allows you to create multiple entries that can be grouped, filtered and formatted similarly. It is part of the People, Places and Items plugin.

Parts of an item post

On the left: An items list page displays tiles in grid view. On the right: An item detail page.

An Item’s tile includes a photo, title, brief description, and summary.

It can link to a post detail page (see below), a different website or nothing at all.

Where it appears
  • When inserted on a page using the PPI: Individual element
  • When inserted on a page as part of a list using the PPI: List element

Unlike People and Places, the tile does not appear at the top of the Item’s post detail page.

Post detail page

The post detail page, should you create one, is the Item’s page on your site. It can be accessed through the tile or any other links pointing to it.

The image from the tile appears at full size at the top of the page and is followed by any text or images entered using the content editor.

Adding a new item

Create a new item

Go to DashboardItems > Add New or, from the black admin bar at the top of any page, click New > Item.

Add a title

Type in a title, or name, for your item.

For consistency, try to make all titles the same letter case: title or sentence.

Brief description

In the Additional Info box, add a brief description. The brief description displays directly underneath the item title on the tile and acts as a teaser when inserted on a page.

Make your descriptions consistent in content, length and tone.

Linking offsite (optional)

By default, the tile links to a post detail page.

If you would like the tile to link to a different URL, enter that link in the External URL field.

If you don’t want the tile to link to its post detail page or an external URL, consider adjusting your PPI settings.

Next in the Additional Information section is a large text box labeled Summary.

The summary only appears on the tile, which appears when an Item is inserted on a page using the PPI: Individual element or inserted on a page as part of a list using the PPI: List element.

It does not appear on the post detail page. So, if you want the same information to show on the post detail page, too, you’ll need to copy and paste it into the content editor (the next large text box with a toolbar above it, toward the bottom of the page).

Add body content

Skip this step if you included an external URL or turned off linking for all Items post detail pages.

Use the default WordPress page editor or Tailor to add and format the post’s body content. This information will only appear on the post detail page; it will not appear on the tile.

In the Items Categories box on the right side of the screen, check all relevant categories or create new ones as needed.

Categories can be used as filters or to embed a subset of items on a page.

See the guide to using categories »

Featured image

An item’s featured image appears at the top of its post detail page at full size and as a thumbnail on its tile.

To show an image, go to the Featured Image box on the right side of the screen and click Set featured image.

Upload or select an image from the Media Gallery that is at least 760 pixels wide.

  • Recommended: Landscape, or horizontally oriented, images with an aspect ratio of 3:2 look best in the featured image space for Items.
  • Not recommended: Vertical images

Cropping your photos to the same aspect ratio before uploading them can make a huge difference in how they look as a unit if inserted together using the PPI: List element or near each other using the PPI: Individual element.

Save, preview, publish

  • In the Publish box in the top right corner, click the gray Save Draft button to save your work.
  • Click the Preview button to see what your Item’s post detail page will look like in a new tab/window; note that you will not see their summary here since that content only appears on the tile.
  • Exit out of the preview tab/window.
  • If you’re ready for your Item post to be publicly viewable, click the blue Publish button; new changes can be published by clicking Update.

Both tiles below have titles and images, but the first one only has a summary and the second only has a brief description.

Images not required

Items don’t have to have a featured image. If you’re categorizing non-visual content like tutorials or research projects, you may not have or need to include images.
